I thank you for your courage to share these stories. I wanted to affirm one point you made at the end. You wrote, “We wholeheartedly believe that the home is the most powerful place on the planet.”
When I was 16 years old and strung out on drugs and alcohol, my family took some dramatic steps to help me. These were the final efforts in a long series of failed attempts to stop my self-destruction. While it took me two more years of struggling before I could honestly admit my problem, I now know that it was their foundation of love, from birth onward, that held my broken heart in those last days of very suicidal drug use. In was because of them that I knew something was very wrong, that dying that way was not my destiny, and that if I could muster the courage to ask for help, they would probably do anything in their power.
They did, and in February of this year, I gratefully celebrated 21 years of continuous sobriety. I work with kids and families now, who struggle in these same ways, and I continue to encourage them that they have so much more power than they know. As you wrote, home really is ‘the most powerful place on the planet.’
