It wasn't morning for me. IT was afternoon. I was living in Milan, teaching at the American School. The kids had gone home. I was grading papers. My cousin called and told me to turn on the news. A lot of American teachers gathered around a fuzzy TV and watched it unfold. for days after, I felt isolated and alone but proud. People would stop me on the street and console me and ask me questions. I felt like I represented the American People in Italy.... I remember exactly where I was, and actually remember what I was wearing, just like I did the day Kennedy was shot when I was in first grade. I was sitting in my office talking to a business associate on the phone who lives in New York and he told me what was happening. I didn't have my TV on and neither did he. He actually saw the smoke from the first plane hitting, told me to turn my TV on and we both sat on our couches, states apart, crying. I remember thinking it was the end of the world and ran out to pick up my kids from school. Your list of what we must remember is absolutely beautiful, my friend, and as I'm sitting here writing this comment I have tears in my eyes remembering all that was lost, not only by the folks in the buildings, but by the millions of lives that were touched by the ones who lost theirs. Thanks, Bruce, for taking the time to wander off the business sector on such an important anniversary to write this, and not only to write this, but to re-write it. The devil tried to stop you, but you persevered and got the message out spectacularly! (If that's a word :) You Rock, my friend!
